Lizarazo and Perez-Garcia fire Colombia to successive wins in Americas Group I

Yuliana Lizarazo and Maria Paulina Perez-Garcia held their nerve during a decisive doubles showdown against Peru to ensure hosts Colombia posted back-to-back victories at the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Americas Group I event in Cucuta.

The clash went the distance after the singles were split following victories for Peru’s Lucciana Perez Alarcon and home favourite Emiliana Arango, leaving Lizarazo and Perez-Garcia to settle matters against Romina Ccuno and Perez Alarcon. They prevailed 6-1 7-6(1).

Colombia are one of three nations, alongside Argentina and Chile, to have triumphed in both of their opening ties in Cucuta, with these teams seemingly battling for supremacy as proceedings unfold.

Alongside the three other nations – Bolivia, Guatemala and of course Peru – competing in Cucuta this week, Colombia, Argentina and Chile are bidding to qualify for the Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs in November.

The two best-performing nations from the Americas Group I event will advance to the Play-offs, from where they will be one win away from contesting the competition’s Qualifiers in April 2024.

Colombia currently occupy one of the those positions, although Argentina also maintained their blistering form with a 3-0 triumph over Bolivia, while Chile overpowered Guatemala 3-0.
