Argentina’s quest to return to the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Play-offs began in fine style with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Guatemala in Cucuta, Colombia.

Martina Capurro Taborda and Julia Riera chalked up singles victories against Kirsten-Andrea Weedon and Maria Gabriela Rivera Corado respectively before Berta Bonardi and Guillermina Naya triumphed in doubles.

Along with five other nations – Bolivia, Chile, hosts Colombia, Guatemala and Peru – Argentina are this week competing in Americas Group I, from where the two best-performing teams will be promoted to November’s Play-offs.

Argentina progressed to the Play-offs from this stage of the competition 12 months ago, only to succumb to Brazil when victory would have propelled the South American outfit to this week’s Qualifiers.

The task for Argentina now is to impress this week and secure their place at November’s Play-offs with a view to reaching the competition’s Qualifiers in April 2024, where victory would guarantee a much-coveted place in the Finals.

Of course, Argentina were not alone in recording victories in their opening Americas Group I tie of the week, with Colombia and Chile also posting wins against Bolivia and Peru respectively.
