Teams announced for Billie Jean King Cup Group I events

The ITF has announced the teams which will compete at the three Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Group I events next month, with Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, Croatia’s Donna Vekic and Colombia’s Camila Osorio all set to compete for their nations.

Other stars of the women’s game set to appear in Billie Jean King Cup action include Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska, Denmark’s Clara Tauson, Egypt’s Mayar Sherif and China, P.R.’s Zhu Lin.

A total of 23 teams will compete across the three events – 11 teams at the Europe/Africa Group I event (played in Antalya, Turkiye on 10-15 April), and 6 teams at both the Asia/Oceania Group I event (played in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 11-15 April) and the Americas Group I event (played in Cucuta, Colombia on 11-15 April).

The seven best-performing nations will advance to November’s Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs – three from Europe/Africa Group I and two each from Asia/Oceania Group I and Americas Group I. Winning nations in the Play-offs will advance to the 2024 Qualifiers, thereby giving those teams a chance to compete for the Billie Jean King Cup title next season.

The squads for the Europe/Africa Group II event, which takes place in Oeiras, Portugal on 10-15 April have also been announced today.

Among the 51 players who will compete at that event are world No. 7 Maria Sakkari, of Greece, while the Estonian duo of Kaia Kanepi and Anett Kontaveit will aim to help their team win promotion back to Group I after relegation in 2022.

The players competing the nine Billie Jean King Cup Qualifier ties (which take place around the world on 14-15 April) will be announced on Friday 17 March.
